Ramblings on Different Forms of Communication
I’m a human, relating to others in various ways. That is, I do not know if I want to be a writer. Or a speaker. Or a videographer for that manner. All I know is that I want to communicate the things in my heart. And I can do that through the means of all these “channels.”
I note some general differences in these examples. To be brief, writing is a comprehensive, well-thought out form of communication. Speaking, on the other hand, is a more circumstantial, spontaneous form of communication. Although, both channels can contain a mix of these, to be sure (honestly I’m not focusing too much on comprehensibility in this piece).
What inspired this piece was that I haven’t written publicly—to you—for a long time. I’ve been quite busy with my master’s degree, which I’ve enjoyed. There’s something intoxicating about thinking and writing a big piece that very few people will see. Although it will be public once it’s done, it’s not written for that purpose. It’s more about displaying my expertise.
But alas, here I am again. I feel a need to communicate to the world. I want to relate to you, and I’m choosing words as my helper. But if there’s a point to this article, I guess it’s I don’t want to limit myself to words when I’m relating. Although it’s been my primary device for four years now, I’m starting to think there’s a place for other channels as well. And I might start to experiment with them.
So, a parting thought: what instead of thinking of yourself as a writer (inhabiting a role), you start to think of yourself as a human, that writes (choosing a behavior)?
